This is shortly after the crash of Oceanic 815. We get a point-of-view shot of someone going through the jungle, amidst littered suitcases and other items. There's a whistle and we look up to see Christian Shephard, calling Vincent the dog over. He tells Vincent that "his son" is unconscious and he needs to wake him up. He sends Vincent off into the jungle, and adds "He has work to do." The next shot is of Jack Shephard waking up in the bamboo forest. He hears a noise and looks to see Vincent coming towards him. The dog runs off past him into the jungle.

When the Man In Black takes Christian's form, Christian is wearing the same suit and tennis shoes that he was buried in.

The Man In Black's ominous tone and the look in his eyes when he talks about Jack's impending "work."

We see here that the Man In Black works fast! He's already found Christian's corpse (and may have already taken it to the caves) and has assumed his form. Having Christian's memories he already knows of his and Jack's last name and knows it's listed on his cave as a 'candidate.' Between that and the location where Jack landed (the bamboo forest close to the heart of the island), he's already singled out Jack as someone of importance.
